United Airlines has been making headlines in the recent past, but not for anything good. They just don’t seem to have any luck when it comes to quality air travel, and that more than includes this little video that a passenger recorded.

During a flight from San Francisco to Hawaii, passengers sitting along the wing seats just happened to glance out the window to see one of the Boeing 777-222’s engines completely missing its exterior, with pieces peeling off every few minutes. Naturally people were whipping out their phones to record it.

“I don’t see anything about this in the manual,” the same person jokingly tweeted.

The plane immediately sent a distress alert once the dilapidated engine was seen, and fortunately the plane landed in Honolulu without anyone harmed. “United flight 1175….landed safely after the pilots called for an emergency landing because of a loss of the engine cowling (the covering of the engine). Our pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft. The aircraft taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned normally,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline hasn’t announced what precisely caused the issue, and they haven’t yet confirmed if the interior engine beneath the covering had been damaged or whether it was just that the covering failed to stay intact. Fortunately, the plane is designed to fly on just a single engine, so even if it did fail completely the plane would have still been able to land.
